Tiya: Ethiopiaโs Mysterious UNESCO World Heritage Site
Located about 85 km south of Addis Ababa, Tiya is one of Ethiopiaโs most intriguing UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It is home to a collection of ancient stelae (stone monuments), some of which date back over 700 years. These mysterious stones, decorated with unique carvings, are believed to be part of an ancient burial site.
Tiya is recognized UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980 for its archaeological and historical value.
Mysterious Origins of origins of Tiya is not yet known and still the exact purpose and creators of the stelae remain uncertain, but they are believed to be gravestones of warriors or important figures. Tiya is part of a wider megalithic tradition found across Ethiopia and East Africa. The site contains more than 40 carved stones, some standing over 2 meters high. It has Mysterious Symbols, Many stelae have carvings of swords, geometric patterns, and human figures, believed to symbolize the achievements of the deceased and Archaeological excavations have revealed tombs beneath some of the stelae, indicating a funerary purpose.
