Day Excursion to – Debre Libanos and Portuguese Bridge

Embark on a captivating journey through northern Ethiopia, exploring the historic Debre Libanos Monastery and the Portuguese Bridge. Travel through the scenic Mount Entoto forests before discovering the monastery’s rich heritage, including its renowned museum and the sacred Cave of Tekla Haimanot, a revered pilgrimage site. Pay tribute at the memorial honoring the victims of the 1937 massacre, then proceed to the Portuguese Bridge, where breathtaking views of the Blue Nile Gorge, encounters with endemic Gelada baboons, and diverse birdlife await. Return to Addis Ababa, taking in the region’s stunning landscapes.

Debre Libanos & Portuguese Bridge Tour

Upon your arrival, we will meet you at the airport or pick you up from your hotel before embarking on a journey to northern Ethiopia. Our drive will take us through the breathtaking chain of mountains and the lush forests of Mount Entoto.

After approximately two hours, we will arrive at Debre Libanos, one of Ethiopia’s most revered monasteries. Here, you can explore its fascinating church museum, which houses a diverse collection of artifacts, including ecclesiastical relics, Italian firearms, giant cooking pots, crowns of past emperors and their wives, traditional musical instruments, and an old wooden shackle.

A short 15-minute walk uphill will lead us to the Cave of Tekla Haimanot, the monastery’s founder, who is said to have spent years in prayer here. The cave is also the source of Debre Libanos’ famed holy water. In front of the church stands a monument commemorating the hundreds of innocent priests, deacons, and worshippers massacred by the Italians in 1937 following an assassination attempt on the brutal viceroy Graziani.

Next, we will visit the Portuguese Bridge, which overlooks the spectacular Blue Nile Gorge. Here, you can marvel at the breathtaking landscapes and observe Ethiopia’s endemic Gelada baboons, as well as a variety of native bird species.

On our return journey, we will take in the panoramic views of Mount Entoto before concluding our trip back in Addis Ababa. Conclude your adventure with a farewell dinner in Addis Ababa, celebrating the country’s vibrant culture and traditions.
